ABOUT ME

which his approaches his professional career. He relishes taking on compositional challenges with a pragmatic, creative and well researched approach.
Joel also approaches his composition fearlessly and with an adventurous spirit. He builds his own instruments and unique sound palettes in exploring every possibility best suited to a project. He is currently developing techniques for hydrophonic recording and how they can be applied to sound production in introducing exciting new sonic environments.

In his own artistic work, Joel takes particular fancy to unique vocal production, rich harmonic structures, exciting horn parts and deep, poetic lyrical structures. He carefully rides a fine line between comedy and tragedy, sometimes driving his work entirely into one or the other, yet such is the absurdity of life, it is sometimes hard to tell the difference.
In his youth Joel toured as a saxophonist and vocalist with the National Youth Jazz Academy and continues to enjoy classic jazz genres. His vast music theatre background also plays into his enthusiasm for story telling, recently performing in Broadway Obsessive Disorder as the Musical Director and performer. Joel shares his passion for theatre, voice and story each week when he coaches in the acting and singing departments at Action Drama Studio. He sees and importance in allowing his students to express themselves authentically with a strong advocacy for diversity in the stories that we tell.

When he isn't working or writing, Joel might be spotted playing down at the local cricket club (usually as an excuse to enjoy the summer sun), or watch the football. He is also a licensed (albeit infrequent) SCUBA diver who has recently tried his hand at Dungeons and Dragons. In fact, Joel will largely find something interesting in most past-times or situations and flourishes when given the opportunity to learn, grow and challenge himself.
